About the Piece

Für Elise (“For Elise”) is a short bagatelle by Ludwig van Beethoven, likely composed around 1810 and issued only after his death in 1867. Catalogued as WoO 59, it is built around a lilting right-hand motif in A minor that returns between contrasting middle sections. The original autograph is lost; the identity of “Elise” remains uncertain, with theories ranging from the singer Elisabeth Röckel to Beethoven’s friend Therese Malfatti.

The piece’s gentle melody, simple broken-chord accompaniment, and clear structure have made it one of the most recognisable works in classical music. Heard in lessons, recitals, and film, it balances tenderness with a touch of drama, which is why it continues to delight new listeners and players alike.
