About the Hymn

Henry Francis Lyte (1793–1847) wrote this hymn in 1847 while facing the final months of his life. It is most often sung to the tune Eventide, composed by William Henry Monk (1823–1889). The words draw on the request of the disciples in Luke 24:29, “Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.”

Beloved across many traditions, Abide With Me is often sung at funerals, memorials, and moments of quiet reflection. Its words remind worshippers of God’s unchanging presence and comfort, even in the darkest hours of life.
