About the Piece

“Ode to Joy” comes from the last movement of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 (premiered 1824), where the composer sets Friedrich Schiller’s poem “An die Freude” to a radiant choral theme. The tune has since become a global symbol of unity and hope, famously adopted as the European Anthem and sung in churches to “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee.”

Its memorable, stepwise melody makes it instantly recognisable on first hearing and a favourite for concerts, school events, and films — including the gospel-infused “Joyful, Joyful” sequence in Sister Act 2. The piece’s bright spirit and singable line keep it beloved by audiences of all ages.
