About the Hymn

Reginald Heber (1783–1826), Bishop of Calcutta, wrote this hymn for Trinity Sunday. First published in 1826, it is most often sung to the tune Nicaea, composed by John Bacchus Dykes (1823–1876). Its text echoes the angelic cry of Isaiah 6:3 and Revelation 4:8: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty.”

Holy, Holy, Holy is a hymn of awe and reverence, lifting worshippers into the praise of Heaven itself. Its words and melody continue to unite Christians in proclaiming the holiness of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
