About the Piece
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) wrote the Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major in the 1730s. Its slow movement, titled simply Air, later became known as Air on the G String after August Wilhelmj’s 19th-century violin version that keeps the melody on one string. In Bach’s original, a flowing tune sits over gentle, steady chords, creating a calm, singing line. The piece is often chosen for weddings, memorials, and quiet moments because it feels peaceful and poised. Its clear melody, soft movement in the bass, and balanced phrases give Air On The G String a still, reflective character that listeners return to again and again.
