About the Hymn
Julia Ward Howe (1819–1910) wrote this hymn in 1861, during the American Civil War. Her stirring words were fitted to the camp-meeting melody by William Steffe, widely known as BATTLE HYMN or “Glory, Hallelujah,” whose marching rhythm carries the refrain’s triumphant cry. Often used at services of remembrance, the hymn proclaims Christ’s justice and hope in the midst of conflict. Its ringing chorus invites courage and steadfast faith, affirming that God’s truth will prevail.
