About the Piece

Johann Strauss II (1825–1899) composed An der schönen blauen Donau in 1866–67. It began as a waltz for male choir with words by Josef Weyl for the Vienna Men’s Choral Association, then quickly became famous in its purely orchestral form. After its success at the 1867 Paris Exposition, “The Blue Danube” spread across Europe and is now a centrepiece of the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert.

The waltz’s lilting 3/4 rhythm, sweeping main theme, and sparkling dance episodes capture the elegance of old Vienna. Heard in ballrooms, concert halls, and films, it has come to symbolise celebration and grace—music that seems to glide like the Danube itself.
