About the Hymn
Sarah Flower Adams (1805–1848) wrote this hymn in 1841, inspired by the story of Jacob’s dream at Bethel in Genesis 28. In the United States it is most often sung to Lowell Mason’s tune Bethany (1792–1872). The hymn gained special renown after being associated with the tragic sinking of the Titanic in 1912. Nearer, My God, To Thee is a prayer for closeness to God in every circumstance, even through suffering and trial. Its words and melody continue to draw believers into a deeper trust in God’s presence and eternal hope.
