About the Piece
Composed in 1848 by Johann Strauss Sr. (1804–1849), Radetzky March, Op. 228, quickly became a symbol of celebration in Vienna. Written in honour of Austrian Field Marshal Josef Radetzky von Radetz, its buoyant rhythms, crisp accents, and memorable main theme made it an instant crowd-pleaser. The march’s bright orchestral style adapts naturally to piano, where the melody and steady left-hand pulse capture its festive spirit. Today it’s best known as the joyous finale of the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert, often accompanied by audience clapping. The piece’s upbeat character and forward drive make it a favourite for ceremonies and encores, offering an unmistakable sense of occasion from the very first bars.
