About the Piece
Amilcare Ponchielli (1834–1886) wrote Dance of the Hours as the Act III ballet for his opera La Gioconda, premiered at La Scala in 1876. The music portrays the passing of a day in four contrasting sections — dawn, daylight, twilight, and night — and soon gained an independent concert life beyond the opera. Its memorable themes and clear, buoyant rhythms have made it a staple in concerts, films, and cartoons — most famously in Disney’s Fantasia (1940). Today it remains a bright, good-humoured classic that audiences instantly recognise.
