About the Hymn

William Whiting (1825–1878) wrote this hymn in 1860 for a student preparing to sail across the ocean. The words were later set to the tune Melita, composed by John Bacchus Dykes (1823–1876). Known as the “Navy Hymn,” it has long been associated with the British Royal Navy and the United States Navy.

Eternal Father, Strong To Save continues to be sung at naval services and remembrance occasions. Its verses call on God’s power over wind and wave, reminding all believers of His care and protection in every danger of life’s journey.
