About the Hymn
William Cowper (1731–1800), friend of John Newton, wrote this hymn in 1772 as part of the Olney Hymns. It focuses on the cleansing power of Christ’s blood, expressed in vivid Biblical imagery. The traditional American tune Cleansing Fountain became the most familiar musical setting. There Is A Fountain continues to be sung as a testimony to the saving power of Christ’s sacrifice. Its simple, memorable words affirm the believer’s hope in the redeeming blood of Jesus, cleansing from sin and giving eternal life.
