About the Piece

Felix Mendelssohn wrote the celebrated Wedding March in 1842 as part of his incidental music for Shakespeare’s *A Midsummer Night’s Dream* (Op. 61). It became a worldwide tradition after it was used at the 1858 wedding of Princess Victoria (Queen Victoria’s daughter) to Prince Frederick William of Prussia, and it has remained a staple for wedding recessionals ever since.

Bright, festive, and instantly recognisable, the march is often performed on organ or with full orchestra for a triumphant exit. Its clear melody and jubilant character make it a natural choice for celebratory occasions and a piece many listeners associate with joyful new beginnings.
