About the Hymn

William Blake’s lines from the preface to *Milton: A Poem* (early 19th century) were set in 1916 by C. Hubert H. Parry, creating the noble tune JERUSALEM. Often associated with national occasions and choral festivals, Parry’s setting marries thoughtful poetry to a memorable, uplifting melody.

Though frequently heard beyond church walls, “Jerusalem” has been sung at weddings and civic services, urging listeners toward holiness, justice, and a renewed vision of God’s Kingdom “in England’s green and pleasant land.”
