About the Carol
“Stille Nacht” was first sung in 1818 in Oberndorf, Austria, with words by priest Joseph Mohr (1792–1848) and music by Franz Gruber (1787–1863). The simple lullaby-like tune Stille Nacht soon travelled the world. Often sung by candlelight, the carol invites quiet wonder at the birth of the Son of God. Its tender peace continues to draw hearts to Christ.
