About the Carol
John Mason Neale (1818–1866) wrote this famous story-carol in 1853, drawing on the legend of the charitable Duke Wenceslas. It is sung to Tempus Adest Floridum, a tune from the 1582 collection Piae Cantiones. Often linked with Boxing Day, its tale of kindness in winter invites practical love in Christ’s Name.
