About the Carol

William Chatterton Dix (1837–1898) wrote this Epiphany text in 1860. It is widely sung to the chorale-style tune Dix, adapted from music by Conrad Kocher (1786–1872), reflecting on the Magi who followed the star to Christ.

The gentle words turn the wise men’s journey into a prayer for today, asking that our gifts and lives be brought to Jesus. It is often used in Epiphany services and as a processional, encouraging steadfast worship and cheerful obedience.
