About the Carol
Poet John Byrom (1692–1763) wrote “Christians, Awake!” in the mid-18th century, and it soon gained its joyful tune Yorkshire by John Wainwright (1723–1768). The text retells Luke 2 with bright, exultant praise. Often sung on Christmas morning, the carol invites God’s people to rise and worship with gladness. Its words and tune express the Church’s joy at the Saviour’s birth and call us to live in His peace.
