About the Hymn
This hymn is based on a 6th–8th century Irish poem attributed to Dallán Forgaill. It was translated into English in 1905 by Mary Byrne and versified by Eleanor Hull in 1912. The words are most often sung to the traditional Irish folk tune Slane, named after the hill where St. Patrick lit the Easter fire in defiance of the pagan king. Be Thou My Vision has become a prayer of single-hearted devotion, asking Christ to be our wisdom, strength, and inheritance. Its simple but powerful words continue to inspire worshippers to place God at the very centre of their lives.
