About the Piece

Antonio Vivaldi (1678–1741) wrote Spring around 1723 as the opening concerto of The Four Seasons (Op. 8). Marked RV 269, it’s paired with a short sonnet that describes singing birds, murmuring brooks, and a sudden spring thunderstorm. The work’s sparkling opening theme and lively echoes of nature have made it one of the most recognisable pieces of Baroque music.

Today, Spring is heard everywhere from concert halls to films and adverts, often used to suggest freshness, renewal, and celebration. Its clear melody and cheerful character translate well to piano, bringing an immediate sense of sunshine and movement to any performance.
