About the Hymn

Joseph Scriven (1819–1886) originally wrote this text in 1855 as a poem of comfort for his mother in Ireland. Later, Charles Crozat Converse (1832–1918) composed the tune Converse, giving the hymn its enduring form. Its simple language and heartfelt message have made it one of the most widely sung hymns of prayer and trust.

What A Friend We Have In Jesus reassures worshippers that they can bring every burden and sorrow to God in prayer. Its words continue to comfort believers with the promise of Christ’s unfailing friendship and care.
