About the Hymn

Isaac Watts (1674–1748) wrote this hymn in 1707, describing the awe and devotion inspired by the cross of Christ. It is most often sung to the tune Rockingham, adapted by Edward Miller (1735–1807). The words have been called one of the finest hymns in the English language, deeply rooted in Scripture and devotion.

When I Survey The Wondrous Cross is frequently sung during Lent and Holy Week. Its powerful words lead believers to reflect on the love of Christ, inspiring humility, gratitude, and renewed dedication to God.
