About the Hymn
William Williams (Pantycelyn, 1717–1791) wrote the original Welsh text “Arglwydd, arwain trwy’r anialwch”; the familiar English version appeared in the 18th century. It is set here to John Hughes’s rousing 1907 tune CWM RHONDDA, shaped by the great Welsh hymn-singing festivals and loved for its broad, confident lines. The hymn pictures the believer’s journey through a wilderness, led by God’s strong hand and fed by His “bread of Heaven.” Its sturdy melody and bold petitions make it a favourite for large congregations, encouraging trust in the Lord’s guidance and care.
