About the Hymn
Written in 1981 by American composer Dan Schutte (of the St. Louis Jesuits), Here I Am, Lord draws on the call narratives of the Bible — especially Isaiah 6 (“Here am I; send me”) and 1 Samuel 3 (“Here I am”). Text and music are by Schutte, and the hymn is sung to the tune HERE I AM, LORD, whose flowing verses and memorable refrain have made it a favourite in churches across many traditions. The hymn invites a personal response to God’s call: to listen, to trust, and to serve where He sends. Its words express both God’s compassion for a needy world and the believer’s willingness to answer, “Here I am.” Often chosen for services of commissioning, ordination, and mission, it continues to encourage worshippers to offer their gifts for His work.
