About the Hymn

Sir Cecil Spring Rice (1859–1918) originally wrote the poem “Urbs Dei” in 1908, later revised into the hymn I Vow To Thee, My Country. It was set to the tune Thaxted, adapted from Gustav Holst’s orchestral work The Planets (1914–16). The hymn blends themes of national loyalty and the greater call of God’s eternal kingdom.

I Vow To Thee, My Country is often sung at national occasions and remembrance services. Its stirring words and noble tune express devotion both to earthly duty and to the higher service of Christ’s heavenly kingdom.
