About the Hymn
Charles Wesley (1707–1788) published this hymn in 1747 under the title “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling.” Over time, it has been sung to several tunes, but the most common in Britain is Blaenwern, composed by William Penfro Rowlands (1860–1937). The hymn reflects Wesley’s vision of sanctifying grace and the fullness of God’s redeeming love. Love Divine continues to be cherished at weddings, services of dedication, and celebrations of Christian love. Its words pray for God’s Spirit to dwell within His people, making their lives a living reflection of His perfect love.
