About the Hymn

Written in 1864 by Bishop William Walsham How, this hymn honours the great company of the faithful. Ralph Vaughan Williams composed the stirring tune SINE NOMINE for The English Hymnal (1906), giving the text its now-famous stride.

Sung on or around All Saints’ Day, it rejoices in the unity of the Church across time and space. With its confident hope of resurrection, the hymn strengthens worshippers to follow Christ with courage until the day of glory.
