About the Hymn
Samuel Crossman (1624–1683) wrote this hymn in 1664, reflecting on the sufferings of Christ. The deeply moving tune Love Unknown was composed much later by John Ireland (1879–1962) and has since become inseparably linked with the text. Together they form one of the most poignant hymns of the Passion season.
