About the Hymn
Samuel John Stone (1839–1900) wrote this hymn in 1866 as part of his collection “Lyra Fidelium.” It was written in response to disputes in the Anglican Church, affirming Christ Himself as the true foundation of His people. The tune Aurelia was composed by Samuel Sebastian Wesley (1810–1876) and has become inseparable from the text. The Church’s One Foundation continues to be sung worldwide, reminding Christians that the Church is built not on human strength but on Christ alone. Its words speak of unity, perseverance, and the hope of the final gathering of God’s people.
