About the Carol
“Brightest And Best of the Sons of the Morning” was written by Bishop Reginald Heber (1783–1826) for Epiphany. Many congregations sing it to the tune Epiphany Hymn, associated with Joseph Francis Thrupp (1827–1867). The carol points worshippers to Christ, the “Star of the East,” reminding us that no costly gift is greater than a humble, devoted heart. Its steady, prayerful tune makes it well loved in Epiphany and early January worship.
