About the Song

William E. Booth-Clibborn (1893–1969) wrote the words to Down From His Glory in the early 1920s, setting them to the well-known Neapolitan melody O SOLE MIO by Eduardo di Capua (1898). The pairing created a gospel song that quickly found a place in English-speaking churches, especially at Christmastime, where its focus on Christ’s birth and true Deity made it a favourite for solos and congregational singing.

The hymn reflects on the mystery of the Son of God taking on flesh — “our God contracted to a span” — and invites wholehearted worship for His saving love. Its memorable refrain, expressing adoration and gratitude, helps congregations dwell on the humility of Jesus and the glory He laid aside, making it a fitting choice for Advent and Christmas services that celebrate the Word made flesh.
