About the Hymn

Charles Wesley (1707–1788) wrote this hymn in 1739 to mark the first anniversary of his conversion. In many hymnals it is sung to AZMON, a tune by Carl G. Gläser (1784–1829) adapted by Lowell Mason (1792–1872), whose straightforward phrasing supports Wesley’s crisp, declarative lines.
