About the Carol
Cecil Frances Alexander (1818–1895) wrote the text in 1848 to teach children the creed through Scripture stories. Henry John Gauntlett (1805–1876) composed the tune Irby, famously opening the Nine Lessons and Carols service at King’s College, Cambridge. The carol gently tells of Jesus’ humble birth and childhood. Its calm assurance helps congregations, young and old, to trust the Saviour who still calls us to Himself.
