About the Carol
Emily Elizabeth Steele Elliott (1836–1897) wrote this hymn in 1864 for work among children and the poor. It is commonly sung to Margaret by Timothy Richard Matthews (1826–1910), tracing Christ’s coming, rejection, and welcome. The refrain prays that the Lord would find room in our hearts.
