About the Hymn
Isaac Watts (1674–1748) wrote the original text, which was later expanded by Robert Lowry (1826–1899). Lowry also composed the lively tune Marching to Zion, which helped the hymn spread quickly through American revival meetings. Its joyful theme of journeying toward Heaven has made it a favourite for congregational singing. The bright, marching character of the music continues to inspire worshippers with hope and confidence.
