About the Carol

Composed by husband-and-wife team Noël Regney and Gloria Shayne in 1962, Do You Hear What I Hear? was written against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis. The Harry Simeone Chorale released the first recording later that year, and Bing Crosby’s 1963 single carried the song to international fame. Its cascading questions move from the night wind to the little lamb, then to the shepherd boy, and finally to the king, creating a simple narrative that points to the Child born in Bethlehem and the hope He brings.

The refrain’s appeal for peace and the closing invitation to “pray for peace, people everywhere” have made this song a thoughtful moment in Advent and Christmas services. Its gentle melody and imaginative images invite listeners to pass on the good news with humility and joy, reminding us that the birth of Christ speaks light into a troubled world.
