About the Hymn
Sanford Fillmore Bennett (1836–1898) wrote the lyrics in 1868, comforted by his friend Joseph P. Webster (1819–1875), who set them to music the same day. Its promise of reunion in Heaven gave hope to many in the 19th century. Often sung at funerals and memorials, it has become one of the most enduring American gospel hymns.
