About the Hymn

William Kethe’s paraphrase of Psalm 100 appeared in the Anglo-Genevan Psalter (1561). The tune OLD HUNDREDTH is attributed to Louis Bourgeois, a leading musician of the Reformation era. Together they formed one of the most enduring pairings in congregational song.

This ringing psalm of praise is widely used as a call to worship and processional. Its sturdy tune and plain, Biblical text invite the whole congregation to “serve the Lord with gladness” and to give thanks for His steadfast love.
