About the Piece

Jeremiah Clarke (1674–1707) composed Prince of Denmark’s March around 1700, probably as part of a suite honouring Prince George of Denmark. Long known by the nickname “Trumpet Voluntary” and for years misattributed to Henry Purcell, the piece is now firmly credited to Clarke. Its bold, trumpet-like tune and steady chordal accompaniment give it a clear ceremonial character.

Today it remains a favourite at weddings and state occasions because of its bright, confident opening and dignified momentum. The memorable melody works well on many instruments, but its stately stride and celebratory tone are what keep Clarke’s march at the top of processional playlists.
