About the Piece

Johannes Brahms (1833–1897) published his Wiegenlied in 1868 as Op. 49 No. 4. Often called “Brahms’ Lullaby,” it sets traditional German verses beginning “Guten Abend, gut’ Nacht.” The tune’s gentle 3/4 sway and simple, stepwise melody helped make it one of the most recognisable lullabies in the world.

Used at bedtime in countless homes, the piece is loved for its calm, rocking accompaniment and warm, reassuring line. Its clear phrasing and steady pulse make it ideal for quiet moments, gentle performances, and teaching a singing, lyrical style at the piano.
