About the Piece
Composed in 1888 by Mexican violinist-composer Juventino Rosas (1868–1894), Over the Waves (Sobre las Olas) became one of the most widely recognised waltzes of the late 19th century. First published for piano, it was quickly arranged for orchestra, band, accordion, and more, its graceful melody carrying the piece far beyond Mexico to concert halls and parlours worldwide. The tune’s gentle 3/4 lilt and sweeping phrases give it a floating, nostalgic character often associated with skating rinks, riverboats, and trapeze scenes under the big top.
