About the Piece

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky composed Swan Lake in 1875–76, his first full-length ballet. It premiered at the Bolshoi Theatre in 1877 and later gained worldwide fame in the 1895 St Petersburg revival by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. The memorable “Swan Theme” (often linked with Princess Odette) is lyrical and expressive, making it one of the most recognisable melodies in classical music.

Today, Swan Lake appears in concert suites, films, and TV, symbolising romance, mystery, and graceful dance. Its broad, singing lines and gentle accompaniment adapt well to piano, offering a moving snapshot of Tchaikovsky’s dramatic style in a short, accessible arrangement.
