About the Piece

Edward Elgar (1857–1934) introduced this tune in 1901 as the trio theme of his Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1 in D major. In 1902 he reused it for the finale of his Coronation Ode, setting new words by A. C. Benson that began “Land of Hope and Glory.” The song quickly became popular in its own right, while the original march remained a concert favourite.

Today the melody is closely linked with national celebrations and the Last Night of the Proms, and the march is also widely used at graduation ceremonies around the world. Its broad, singable line and steady march pulse give it a grand, uplifting character that audiences recognise immediately.
