About the Piece

George Frideric Handel wrote the suites now known as Water Music for a grand outdoor performance on the River Thames in July 1717, given for King George I on royal barges. The lively “Hornpipe” is one of the best-loved movements: buoyant, fanfare-like, and often heard in the D-major suite with trumpets and drums leading the festive sound.

Recognisable from concerts, TV, and public celebrations, the Hornpipe carries a joyful, processional character that feels instantly ceremonial. Its steady pulse and bold phrases make it an uplifting choice for occasions that call for sparkle and grandeur.
