About the Piece
Gioachino Rossini wrote the William Tell Overture as the curtain-raiser to his final opera, premiered in Paris in 1829. The overture unfolds in four connected scenes: a serene dawn, a violent storm, a pastoral “Ranz des Vaches” (Alpine herdsman’s call), and the exhilarating “March of the Swiss Soldiers.” The music sets the stage for the legend of Swiss patriot William Tell and the struggle for freedom. The overture’s finale is one of the most recognisable themes in classical music, later popularised by radio, film, and television — notably *The Lone Ranger*. Its vivid storytelling, from calm sunrise to full-throttle energy, keeps it a concert favourite and a crowd-pleasing introduction to Rossini’s style.
