About the Hymn
Katharina A. von Schlegel (18th century) wrote the original German text; Jane L. Borthwick translated it in the 1850s. The beloved tune FINLANDIA comes from Jean Sibelius’s symphonic work (1899), later adapted for congregational singing. Often sung at times of grief and reflection, Be Still, My Soul points to God’s faithful care through every storm. Its calm counsel and expansive melody help believers rest in His providence and hope in His promises.
