About the Hymn
Sabine Baring-Gould (1834–1924) wrote this marching hymn in 1865 for a Whitsuntide procession. Sir Arthur Sullivan (1842–1900) later composed the tune ST GERTRUDE, giving the text its robust, forward-moving character. Long used in mission services and church parades, the hymn calls believers to follow Christ as one united company. Its confident refrain looks to Jesus, the cross before His people and the world behind.
