About the Piece
Johann Strauss II premiered his comic operetta Die Fledermaus in Vienna in 1874. Its whirl of masquerade parties, champagne, and mischief is matched by some of Strauss’s most buoyant waltz melodies, widely heard in the overture and in concert waltz selections such as Du und Du, which weave together themes from the show. These tunes helped confirm Strauss’s title as the “Waltz King.” The music’s lilting three-beat swing and gracious melodic lines evoke a glittering ballroom. Light, witty, and instantly likeable, the Die Fledermaus waltzes remain concert favourites, bringing a touch of Viennese celebration to any programme.
