About the Piece

Czech composer Julius Fučík (1872–1916) wrote this lively march in 1897, first calling it a “Grande Marche Chromatique” for its flashy chromatic runs. He soon retitled it Entry of the Gladiators, and in 1901 Louis-Philippe Laurendeau’s band arrangement under the name “Thunder and Blazes” spread its popularity across North American circuses.

Today its bold fanfares and tumbling scales are instantly recognisable as the quintessential “circus” sound. Energetic and exuberant, the music captures the pageantry of parade and ring entrance, making it a perennial crowd-pleaser at festive events and light concerts.
