About the Piece
George Frideric Handel (1685-1759) published the music now known as The Harmonious Blacksmith in 1720 as the final movement of his Suite No. 5 in E major (HWV 430) for harpsichord. Handel called it simply Air with Variations; the familiar nickname appeared many years later and its true origin remains uncertain. Its memorable theme and brilliant variations have made The Harmonious Blacksmith one of Handel's most popular keyboard works. Frequently heard in concerts, recordings, and teaching collections, it remains a favourite with audiences and pianists alike.
